Five feared dead as truck with PMS explodes

No fewer than five persons were feared dead on Thursday in a multiple accident that occurred at Ibafo few kilometers to Redeemed Camp, around Danko Village along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway when a trailer loaded with Premium Motor Spirit, rammed into some trucks parked along the Express way.

An eyewitness told Vanguard that the accident occurred when a trailer with registration number, Kebbi, XB370ZUR rammed into some of the petrol tankers parked haphazardly on the two sides of the express way, leaving several people critically injured. The tankers according to the source, immediately were gutted by fire and burnt not less than five people popularly called motor boys while it also burnt not less than Nine of the heavy trucks.

When Vanguard visited the scene of the accident, there was heavy grid lock leading to the diversion of vehicles to other areas of the road. It was gathered that, three tankers and seven articulated vehicles were involved in the accident. Speaking with newsmen on the matter, the Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander in Ogun State, Ayobami Omiyale said the accident occurred at about 12 : 30am on Thursday, and that, no fewer than 30 passengers were involved in the accident with two unidentified persons burnt beyond recognition.

He further said that, five people were critically injured as the accident was caused by dangerous driving, while explaining that, one of the articulated vehicles involved in the accident caught fire, consuming some other vehicles and killing two. He said “one of the articulated vehicles was trying to navigate between two cars and it lost control before catching fire that led to the accident on the road.” He however disclosed that the injured were receiving treatment at undisclosed hospitals near the scene.

He also said the burnt bodies had been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu. He stated that the fire was put out by men of the fire service, adding that the FRSC was still making efforts to remove the burnt vehicles and control the traffic. As at the time of filing the report, men of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency were seen moving to the scene of the accident to control traffic and remove the burnt vehicles. TRACE Unit Commander for Mowe-Ibafo, Olusola Johnson Ojuoro told newsmen that the agency was on ground to clear the accident scene.

I am unhappy about chelsea FA cup and champions league victory--Romelu Lukaku

The Belgium and Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku said he felt no joy at his club's Champions League and FA Cup triumphs and would rather be loaned out than repeat a season warming the bench. The 19-year-old, who moved to Chelsea from Anderlecht a year ago, started only four times last season and came on as a substitute on eight occasions.

Lukaku told De Standaard newspaper that he would often leave a match after 70 minutes if he was watching from the stands and said he felt no sense of achievement when Chelsea won the FA Cup, in which he played only a few minutes in the third round. "When [Salomon] Kalou put the cup on my lap in the bus I asked him to take it away immediately.

I didn't want to touch it because just as with the Champions League I had no part in it at all," he told the newspaper on Thursday. "I don't like people talking to me about the Champions League. It wasn't me, but my team that won the trophy." Lukaku said he had improved in training, was eating far fewer hamburgers and, despite good performances in the matches he had started, had failed to win a regular place in the team.

"Chelsea really wanted me last summer and paid a lot for me but after a while I thought are you just throwing money around?" he said. Lukaku said he would seek talks with Chelsea's manager, whether that was the incumbent Roberto Di Matteo or a successor. "During the conversation with the manager I will see whether he's serious about me or not. If not, I will go away on loan. I have to play," Lukaku said.

His fellow Belgian, the goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, joined Chelsea from Racing Genk a year ago, but was immediately loaned out to the Spanish side Atlético Madrid and was part of their Europa League-winning team.

SHOCKER! UNDERGRAD, DIES AFTER SLEEPING WITH DOG.(A MUST READ)

Uche(her surname withheld) was an Accountancy part time student of a Federal University, before her death recently. She was one of the happening babes in town, although she likes doing her things in her own little way. In fact, a lot of her course mates doesn’t know her because she was quiet and she doesn’t talk to anyone in her class. She’s from Imo State; her father is late while her mother stays in the village.

We gathered that, she is from a poor back ground, but she struggled to make ends needs and to also send her younger ones to school, through the money she got from her many men friends. Uche stayed with her friend in a duplex around Wuse 2, and she drove a Honda car, before she met a guy who changed her life completely, but who eventually used her for rituals. One of Uche’s friends revealed to us how she confessed to her before she breathed her last about 2 months ago.

Uche,we learnt met the America based guy in one restaurant in Abuja. Roland spoilt her silly with money and gift; he even bought for her, an exotic car and promised to marry her. She was very happy that she has finally met the man of her dream, especially considering the fact that the guy also hails from the same place with her. Few weeks after Uche met Roland, she started spending almost every day with him. Roland spent 6 weeks in Nigeria before going back to the United States; he even gave Uche an engagement ring that she flaunts before her friends.

Uche kept most of the things she shared with Roland to herself until she fell ill and went to about 3 hospitals, where she was told there was nothing wrong with her. One of her friends who stayed with her, later took her to a white garment church in Kubwa,a suburb of Abuja. The Prophet, we gathered saw vision about her predicament and advised Uche to confess what has happened to her or else she will die, initially she didn’t want to talk but after much persuasion from her friends, she did.

She said, Roland likes adventure, so he suggested they should do some nasty things. She said Roland had a dog he cherishes, and he suggested she sleeps with the dog while he watches her, she said she doesn’t want to do it, but later she had sex with the dog, her friend further revealed that,Uche was angry after the sex with dog show, but Roland begged her and gave her a car key(Infinity Jeep), assuring her nothing will happen to her. Roland left the country the following day, and promised to start processing her papers to come to the United States once he gets back to U.S.

Uche’s friend and the prophet called the guy but the number didn’t exist. They also asked her for the address of Roland’s house in Abuja but they didn’t get the address she described. The Prophet advised she should be taking back home while she beg God to save her, because she has been used for rituals. Uche died few days later.

3 men to die by hanging for robbery

A High Court in Abakaliki on Wednesday sentenced three men to death by hanging for robbery. The condemned men Chukwuma Idenyi, Nwobodo Omebe and Monday Ekwe of Izzi and Abakaliki Local Government Areas dispossessed their victims the sum of N180, 925. Delivering the judgment, Justice Paul Elechi, held that the prosecutor proved his case beyond reasonable doubt.

Elechi , therefore, sentenced the accused persons to death by hanging. According to NAN, the judgment was given after the parties adopted their written addresses. In his argument before the judgment was given, the counsel to the defendants, Mr Vin Njoku, prayed the court to dismiss the matter.Njoku argued that the prosecuting counsel and the complainant failed to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.“There were contradictions of the amount by the complainant and the prosecutor when the matter was first reported to the police and thereafter taken to court,” he said.

Proeecuting counsel, Mr. Roy Ude argued that his client was robbed and dispossessed of the said amount contributed by his community for school projects.“If the accused persons were not properly punished the trend would continue in the community and constitute threat to the peace and security of the people.

Pastor Tries To Charm Rattle Snake By Faith; Bitten To Death

A "serpent-handling" West Virginia pastor died after his rattlesnake bit him during a church ritual, just as the man had apparently watched a snake kill his father years before. Pentecostal pastor Mark Wolford, 44, hosted an outdoor service at the Panther Wildlife Management Area in West Virginia Sunday, which he touted on his Facebook page prior to the event. "I am looking for a great time this Sunday," Wolford wrote May 22, according to the Washington Post. "It is going to be a homecoming like the old days.

Good 'ole raised in the holler or mountain ridge running, Holy Ghost-filled speaking-in-tongues sign believers." Robin Vanover, Wolford's sister, told the Washington Post that 30 minutes into the outdoor service, Wolford passed around a poisonous timber rattlesnake, which eventually bit him. "He laid it on the ground," Vanover said in the interview, "and he sat down next to the snake, and it bit him on the thigh."

Vanover said Wolford was then transported to a family member's home in Bluefield about 80 milesJim Shires, owner of the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluefield, told ABC News that Wolford died Monday. Wolford's church, the Apostolic House of the Lord Jesus in Matoaka, will host a viewing Friday and a funeral service Saturday morning. Wolford will be buried at the Hicks Family Plot in Phelps, Ky. Officials at the Panther Wildlife Management Area had been unaware of Sunday's event until they were notified by callers after the service.

"We did not know that this event was happening, and if we had known about it or if we had been asked for permission, permission would not have been granted," Hoy Murphy, public information officer for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, told ABC News. Hoy said West Virginia state park rules prohibit animals other than dogs and cats on the property. While snake-handling is legal in West Virginia, other Appalachian states, including Kentucky and Tennessee, have banned the practice in public spaces.

Snake-handlers point to scripture as evidence that God calls them to engage in such a practice toshow their faith in him. Mark 16: 17-18 reads, "And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Wolford told the Washington Post magazine in 2011 that he is carrying on the tradition of his ancestors by engaging in snake handling. "Anybody can do it that believes it," Wolford said.

"Jesus said, 'These signs shall follow them which believe.' This is a sign to show people that God has the power." Wolford said watched his own father die at the age of 39 after a rattlesnake bit him during a similar service."He lived 101/2 hours," Wolford told the Washington Post Magazine. "When he got bit, he said he wanted to die in the church. Three hours after he was bitten, his kidneys shut down. After a while, your heart stops. I hated to see him go, but he died for what he believed in. "I know it's real; it is the power of God," Wolford told the Washington Post Magazine last year. "If I didn't do it, if I'd never gotten back involved, it'd be the same as denying the power and saying it was not real."

BREAKING NEWS: Kidnapped German killed in JTF raid - Source

A top security source has told Daily Trust that a German, Raufach Edgar, who was kidnapped in Kano on January 26 this year was killed by his captors this morning before he could be rescued by men of the JTF. The JTF had conducted a raid at Danbare area opposite the new campus of Bayero University Kano this morning after tracing the kidnapped German to the hideout where he was being held but the captors killed him before the JTF could apprehend them.

The raid is still ongoing and sporadic shootings are still being heard by residents who are all trapped within their homes and unable to go to work. A military helicopter is also still hovering overhead, providing aerial support to the forces on the ground. The JTF is to brief the press soon on the incident. Raufach Edgar was until his kidnap working with Dantata and Sawoe construction company. He was abducted by two gun men around 8 am on January 26 along the Zaria - Kano expressway were his company is located. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb connection On March 27, a Mauritanian and four other men were arrested in Kano over the January kidnapping.

Four of the suspects were arrested in a raid on a supermarket owned by the Mauritanian, while the fifth was held in a separate raid. “Guns and a laptop were recovered in the store and the documents found in the computer, including an AQIM operation manual, showed that the suspects are linked to AQIM (Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) and were involved in the kidnap of the German engineer in January,” one of the sources said in describing the supermarket raid. AQIM has also disclosed through a private news agency in Mauritania a week before the raid that it was holding the German and that it wanted to swap him for a jailed Muslim woman.

A video obtained by the agency, ANI, showed Raupach, his hands tied behind his back, surrounded by masked gunmen. In the video he called on his "parents, friends and German public opinion" to convince Berlin to "bring an end to the torture of our Muslim sister", adding that only her liberation will save his life. AQIM warned that any attempt to rescue Raupach will lead to his death, as happened in the case of Italian engineer Franco Lamolinara and British colleague Chris McManus, killed earlier this month during a failed rescue bid by Nigerian forces.

A source, speaking of the Mauritanian, said “he turned the upper floor of his store into a hideout where he housed his three Nigerian accomplices.” Germany responds A release said to be authorised by the German Embassy in Abuja and published as an advert in Daily Trust on May 11, 2012 claimed the German woman in question, had been released. The woman, Filiz Gelowicz, who had converted to Islam and now bears the name Uma Saifullah Al-Ansariya, was released two weeks ago, according to the advert.

The publication announcing the release of the jailed German woman said, “100 days missing. Your sister Uma Saifullah Al-Ansariya (Filiz Gelowicz) is free since two weeks. When do you release our brother Edgar?? His friends are waiting for him…” Edgar’s photo was placed by the side of the text of the advert, which also contained a message in Arabic apparently meant to inform the kidnappers of the release of Gelowicz.

Son Drags 96yrs Old Father To Court Over Plans To Re-Marry

A United States-based Nigerian, Emeka Mazie, has dragged his 96-year-old father to court for insisting to re-marry after the demise of his wife eight years ago. The suit with number HU/54/2012 filed before the Umuahia High Court 4, is presided over by Justice Agwu Kalu. Counsel to the defendant, Miss Ebere Orji, told the court that her client, Chief Israel Mazie, and father of Emeka, had contracted a marriage with Ebere Ndubuka under the Marriage Act.

She noted that his children from the late wife (Emeka’s mother) had continued to obstruct the marriage, pointing out that his client was hale and hearty and entered the marriage with his whole mind. She maintained that the plaintiff and only son of Israel with his sisters was duly informed before the marriage was contracted but regretted that they made a u-turn to stop the union.

Counsel to the Plaintiff, Mrs Ann Uchendu, told the court that Israel and Ndubuka had yet to consummate their marriage traditionally. She pointed out that the defendants secretly obtained a marriage certificate from Bende Local Government Area of Abia State. She also told the court that Ndubuka, 40, had been boosting that she “must marry Israel under any condition”.

Kalu after listening to both counsel asked Israel why he wanted another wife. He told the parties to explore alternative means of resolving the matter peacefully in the interest of the family. “I have examined this man (Israel), even though he is old, the papers before me do not show he is either mental nor senile. “The L.C.M. of this matter is for the parties to return home and find a more peaceful way of sorting out this matter,” Kalu said. He urged the parties to respect the views of each other, noting that at the plaintiff’s age he would never wish away his first son or the son abandon the father.

Kalu added that resorting to alternative dispute resolution became imperative as there was no serious dispute to judge on the case. He adjourned the matter to October 24 for report on settlement. Israel told the court that his decision to re-marry was to get somebody to cook and assist him in keeping the compound clean. “Since my wife died eight years ago, nobody cooks or assists in cleaning the compound for me.

All my children live in America,” he claimed. The plaintiff told the court that he received with shock the plans of his father to re-marry at his age. He said: “if my father must get another wife, he ought to discuss it with me.”

I Am Totally Against The Renaming Of Unilag To Maulag..Soyinka

This is one gift horse which, contrary to traditional saying, must be inspected thoroughly in the mouth. Primary from all of us must be a plea to the MKO Abiola family not to misconstrue the protests against the naming of the University of Lagos after their heroic patriarch. Issues must be separated and understood in their appropriate contexts.

The family will acknowledge that, among the loudest opposing voices to Jonathan’s gift horse, are those who have clamoured tirelessly that MKO Abiola, the Nigerian nation’s president-elect, be honoured nationally, and in a befitting manner. Next is my confession to considerable shock that President Goodluck Jonathan did not even think it fit to consult or inform the administrators of the university, including Council and Senate, of his intention to re-name their university for any reason, however laudable.

This arbitrariness, this act of disrespect, was a barely tolerated aberration of military governance. It is totally deplorable in what is supposed to be a civilian order. After that comes the bad-mouthing of MKO Abiola and the Nigerian electorate by President Jonathan who referred to MKO as the “presumed winner” of a historic election. While applauding the president for finally taking the bull by the horn and rendering honour unto whom honour is due, the particularities of this gesture have made it dubious, suspect, and tainted.

You do not honour someone while detracting from his or her record of achievement. MKO Abiola was not a presumed winner, but the President-elect of a nation, and thus universally acknowledged. It is sad, very sad, that after his predecessor who, for eight full years of presidency, could not even bear to utter the name of a man who made his own incumbency possible, along comes someone who takes back with the left hand what the right has offered.

However, there is hope. Legalists have claimed that there is a legal flaw to the entire process. The university, solidly backed by other tertiary institutions nation-wide, should immediately proceed to the courts of law and demand a ‘stay of execution’. That should give President Jonathan time to re-consider and perhaps shift his focus to the nation’s capital for institutions begging for rituals of re-naming. After all, it is on record that the House of Assembly did once resolve that the Abuja stadium be named after the man already bestowed the unique title of “Pillar of African Sports”.

He deserved that, and a lot more. What he did not deserve is to be, albeit posthumously, the centre of a fully avoidable acrimony, one that has now resulted in the shutting down one of the institutions of learning to whose cause, the cause of learning, President-elect MKO Abiola also made unparalleled private contributions. Let me end by stressing that my position remains the same as it was when the University of Ife was re-named Obafemi Awolowo University.

Gov Jang Has Been Evicted From Govt House

Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang vacated the newly-renovated Governor Lodge and Office, Jishe, Jos because the March 23 Supreme Court ruling had declared Nasarawa State the owner of the property, investigation has revealed. The governor’s sudden relocation from the property recently sparked rumours he might have fled because of the new security fears in the crisis-prone Jos, where many have been killed in sectarian attacks.

However, our correspondent learnt that two states had, in an asset sharing agreement brokered by the late Head of State Gen. Sani Abacha, agreed that some property, including the Government House should be given to Nasarawa. Nasarawa was created on October 1, 1996 by the Abacha administration.

It was learnt that the Jang administration refused to abide by the agreement as it went ahead to renovate the building, which he occupied as Government House. However, the apex court ruled that the property it renovated by the state government recently belongs to Nasarawa.

Justice John Fabiyi, who read the lead judgment, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday, said it was wrong for Plateau to renege on an agreement it validly entered into Nasarawa State had averred that in an agreement between the then Military Administrators of Plateau and Nasarawa states, Col Habibu Shuaibu and Wing Commander Abdullahi Ibrahim respectively, and brokered by Abacha, Plateau was to cede 13 property, among whom was the present Government House and Lodge, Jishe to Nasarawa.

Nasarawa had also asked the apex court to direct Plateau to hand over all title documents relating to the said properties or, to otherwise transfer the said properties to the plaintiff forthwith and an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendant, its servants, agents, officers and or privies from interfering with the plaintiffs right to peaceful occupation and enjoyment of the properties afore-listed.

Fabiyi said, “In my opinion, it is not right for the defendant (Plateau) to attempt to back out from the agreement in Exhibit NAS 4. The defendant cannot retrace its steps in the prevailing circumstances … the plaintiff has directly by evidence and the applicable laws proved the case properly against the defendant.” Secretary to the Plateau State Government, Prof Shedrack Best, had earlier said the governor did not leave because of a dispute with Nasarawa.

When prodded on the court judgment, he referred our correspondent to the State Attorney-General, Mr. Edward Pwajok, for clarification. He said, “For the records, Jang has not relocated to Rayfield. He simply works from Rayfield Government House, which was not shut down for all the time government was run from Jishe. The two locations belong to Plateau and government transactions have always been from both locations. However all efforts to speak to Pwajok were unsuccessful.

Presidency 2015: Suit against Jonathan begins June 21

Following the inability of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to amicably resolve issues surrounding the eligibility of President Goodluck Jonathan to seek re-election in 2015, an Abuja High Court, yesterday, fixed June 21 to begin hearing on the matter. Justice Mudashiru Onyangi okayed full-blown hearing on the case after he was informed, yesterday, that the planned out-of-court settlement of the case failed.

President Goodluck Jonathan It will be recalled that the plaintiff, Mr Cyriacus Njoku, who is a member of the PDP, had on April 18, sought time to explore the possibilities of settling the matter without recourse to the court, a request that made the trial judge to adjourn the case till yesterday to receive a report of settlement from the parties. However, when the case was called up yesterday, counsel to the plaintiff, Mr Ugochukwu Osuagwu, told the court that the out-of-court settlement deal crumbled.

Consequently, by consent of all the parties, the case was fixed for hearing, even as Justice Onyangi ordered the respondents to ensure that they filed the necessary processes before the adjourned date. The court added that the substantive suit and preliminary objections raised against it by the respondents would be heard on the same date. Specifically, the plaintiff had gone before the high court, praying it to bar President Jonathan from contesting presidential election in 2015, contending that he is already completing his second term in office.

He said his decision to seek judicial interpretation regarding whether the incumbent president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can present himself as a valid candidate in the next general election, was sequel to a declaration he said was made by President Jonathan in the first week of March 2012, to the effect that he is still serving his first term in office. Consequently, he urged the high court to determine whether in the light of the express provisions of section 137(1) (b) of the 1999 constitution, as amended, president Jonathan can be administered thepresidential Oath of Office thrice.

Those joined in the suit were President Jonathan, the PDP, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as 1stto 3rd defendants respectively. Moreover, he has asked the court to determine “Whether Section 135(2) of the Constitution, which specifies a period of four years in office for the President, is only available or applicable to a person elected on the basis of an actual election or includes one in which a person assumes the position of President by operation of law, as in the case of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

As well as, “whether Section 137(1) (b) of the Constitution, which provides that a person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President, if he has been elected to such office at any two previous elections, applies to the first defendant, who first took an oath of office as substantive President on May 6, 2010 and took a second oath as President on May 29, 2011.”

Besides, he sought a declaration that ‘the President’s tenure of office began on May 6, 2010 when his first term began and his two terms shall end on May 29, 2015 after taking his second oath of office on May 29, 2011; and by virtue of Section 136 (1) (b) of the Constitution, no person (including the first defendant) shall take the oath of allegiance and the oath of office prescribed to in the Seventh Schedule to this Constitution more than twice.

Even as he beseeched the court for an order of injunction restraining the PDP from further sponsoring or attempting to sponsor the first defendant as candidate for election to the office of the President in the 2015; and an order directing the third defendant, INEC, from accepting the name of the first defendant where sponsored by his party again to run for president in the 2015 presidential election to be supervised and conducted by the third defendant (INEC).

Though President Jonathan earlier challenged the suit which he branded “frivolous and highly vexatious,” the PDP, through its national legal adviser, Mr. Victor Kwon, canvassed reasons why the case should be dismissed in its entirety. In its preliminary objection, PDP queried the locus-standi of the plaintiff to seek such reliefs against Jonathan, saying “the interest the plaintiff claims in bringing this suit is one which he shares with millions of other members of the 2nd defendant in all geopolitical zones of the country.”

In an affidavit deposed to by one Nanchang Ndam, the party argued that: “neither the PDP nor any political party has started selling or issuing nomination forms for the 2015 presidential elections and the plaintiff has not bought or obtained any such form from the second defendant or any other political party. “Contrary to the depositions in paragraphs 4, 7 and 8 of the said affidavit, the first defendant will only be completing his first term of office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in May 2015. “The first defendant has contested election as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria only once, and that is at the April 2011 general election.

“If the first the defendant vies for President in 2015, the plaintiff and other eligible Nigerians would not be denied the opportunity of taking a shot at the presidency in 2015 as they would join the first defendant in the contest whether within the auspices of the second defendant or on the platform of other political parties. “Contrary to the depositions of paragraph 3 of the said affidavit, the third defendant (INEC) has not given notice of poll for the 2015 general elections and so nominations have not opened for those seeking to contest the office of President in the election.

“It is only in 2014 or thereabouts when the third defendant (INEC) gives notice of poll enabling political parties, including the PDP, to nominate their candidates for the presidential elections that it would be known whether the plaintiff or the first defendant would vie for President in 2015. It is in the interest of justice to grant this preliminary objection,” the party added. Nevertheless, before the court could commence hearing on the matter, the plaintiff, re-approached the court, saying the PDP ward in in Zuba, Gwagwalada Area Council of Abuja, where he is registered, persuaded him to discontinue further hearing on the case.

He however told the court that he would not hesitate to re-activate the case should the negotiation process fail. Meanwhile, President Jonathan had described the plaintiff as a joker, insisting that he was confident that the matter would be dismissed as grossly lacking in merit. Jonathan who challenged the suit through his consortium of lawyers led by Chief Ade Okeaya-Inneh, SAN, insisted that the 1999 constitution, as amended, permits him to contest for not more than two terms of 4-years each.

The president, in a15-paragraph counter affidavit that was deposed on his behalf by a counsel in the chambers of his lead counsel, said he was yet to indicate or announce anywhere that he would contest for presidency in 2015. In the said counter affidavit, counsel to Jonathan averred: “I am a counsel in the law firm of Ade Okeaya-Inneh and Co. Counsel to the 1st defendant in this suit, by virtue of which I am conversant with the facts of this case.

I have the consent and authority of the 1stdefendant/respondent to depose to this affidavit “When my law firm was briefed by the 1stdefendant to represent him in his action, I, together with Mr Mattew Aikhionbare (senior special assistant to the President) and Dr Reuben Abati (special adviser on media and publicity to the President) meticulously went through the 11-paragraph affidavit of the plaintiff in support of his originating summons. “The 1st defendant is currently doing his first term of 4 years in office as the president of Nigeria as provided by the 1999 constitution as amended.

The 1st defendant status and position is formidably backed by the 1999 constitution. “The constitution of Nigeria only makes provisions for a president to contest for not more than 2 terms of 4 years each. The constitution recognizes the Executive President’s tenure of office to be 4 years. “I was informed by Dr Reuben Abati on the April 4, 2012 at about 5.30 pm in his office and I verily believe that. ‘The 1stdefendant has not indicated or announced anywhere whether in words or in writing that he will contest for the presidential elections to be conducted in 2015.

“The Late P resident Umaru Musa Yar’Adua contested and won the presidential elections conducted in 2007 for a one term of four years. He was the president from May 29, 2007 until sometime in May 2010 when he passed on. Yar’Adua’s four years was to end in 2011.’ Jonathan further told the court that on May 6, 2010, he was sworn in as the president after the demise of the Late President Yar’Adua thereby completing Yara’Adua’s 12 months of the 4 years tenure, stressing that this is the first time he is coming to power as the president of Nigeria through a conducted election wherein he was voted as the presidential candidate of his party, the PDP.

The President told the court that the plaintiff neither attached copies of his recent tax clearance certificate from the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, nor his PDP membership card as proof of who he claimed to be. Therefore, he asked the presiding judge to discountenance the suit as it was meant to make the court labour in futility over a suit that is purely an academic exercise. Remarkably, this is the second time the plaintiff, Njoku is dragging President Jonathan to court with a view to thwarting his political ambitions.

It will be recalled that he had in August 2010, attempted to stop the PDP from allowing Jonathan to participate in the PDP presidential primaries of January 2011. Njoku, from Zuba Ward in Gwagwalada Area Council of Abuja and with PDP registration number 1622735, had previously urged the court to ask the PDP to respect its principle on zoning formula in line with Article 7. 2(c) of the party’s constitution. He had insisted that the declaration of Jonathan (third defendant) to contest the presidency on the PDP platform was contrary to Article7.2(c) of the 2009 Constitution of the PDP, as amended. However, the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Justice Lawan Gummi dismissed the zoning suit, thus paving way for President Jonathan to emerge as the flag bearer of the party in the last general elections.

Jonathan launches energy saving bulbs

President Goodluck Jonathan Wednesday formally launched energy saving bulbs otherwise known as LED (light emitting diodes) with a view to encouraging Nigerians to buy the bulbs in order to reduce the cost of energy consumption in the country . The formal launching of the bulb is a fiest step in government’s commitment to ensuring that reputable companies are persuaded to come to Nigeria to begin local production of the bulb as well as encourage local manufacturers of electricity bulbs to change to the energy saving.

president Jonathan who performed the ceremony at the presidential villa noted that ‘ the whole world is changing, they are phasing out the bulbs that emit so much heat to ones that save energy. It has nothing to do with our commitment to stabilise power in this country.

We will continue to work hard to stabilise power and as we work hard, this is a big country it will take us up to a year to create the awareness across the country and we don’t need to wait until we stabilise power before we begin to talk about changing our bulbs. “As part of the transformation agenda, it is also important for us to begin to discuss with our brothers and sisters to change some of the habits.

Every nation grows and as it grows it begins to change. Only yesterday we were talking about grow local eat local and buy local, encouraging Nigerians to begin to patronize Nigerian made products. “Today it is about power and energy. Just like telecommunication, Nigerians spend a lot time on phone making so many calls. We realize that in this country, probably because it is government that pays the bills, in public offices and houses where government pay bills, people leave light on in day time. Some places street lights will be on till 8 a.m. In some houses security light will be on in day time.

This is not what is happening in other countries. “In some countries if you move from bedroom to the sitting room you switch-off the light all is to conserve energy and also for safety reasons because it is good to off the sockets and bulbs that we are not using. These are things that we will continue to discuss. So, today we are formally launching this bulb that will reduce the cost of energy.

We want Nigerians to pay very little” he noted. The Minister of Power, Prof. Bart Nnaji, in his remarks noted that the urban poor as well as rural dwellers would especially benefit from the usage of the bulb as it would not cost them too much.

UNILAG shut; no going back – Jonathan

Authorities of the University of Lagos, yesterday, ordered immediate closure of the university following protests by students of the institution which entered second day over the renaming of the school to Moshood Abiola University. This came as the Federal Government insisted that there was no going back on the decision. President Goodluck Jonathan’s announcement during his Democracy Day broadcast, Tuesday, renaming University of Lagos sparked off spontaneous protests from the students of the institution.

On the second day of the protests, the students and lecturers arrived the Third Mainland Bridge as early as 7am carrying placards of various inscriptions, conveying a message that they don’t want the new name. They barricaded the bridge and prevented motorists from accessing it as they chanted “We don’t want MAU, give us our UNILAG.” The protest led to a traffic gridlock in that axis as civil servants whose offices are situated at Victoria Island and Ikoyi were unable to get to their offices at the usual 8am.

Motorists were therefore compelled to make use of Ikorodu Road to CMS which is the only alternative route to the Island, as commuters were forced to pay fare that was fifty per cent higher than the normal. The protesting students vowed not to vacate the roads until President Jonathan reverts the name of the school to UNILAG. Unilag already has a 50-yr-old name — ASUU chairman Speaking on the protest, Dr Karo Ogbineka, UNILAG ASUU Chairman said: “If President Goodluck Jonathan must honour MKO, he could name one of the newly established nine Federal universities after him.

UNILAG, already has a name that has been in existence for 50 years. “All over the world, governments build monuments to honour their heroes. The president could as well change May 29 democracy day to June 12 in honour of MKO”. At Fadeyi bus-stop the protesters hijacked two BRT buses which were used to barricade the two sides of the road causing serious traffic gridlock that lasted hours as some passengers disembarked and walked, while others had to terminate their journey. The protest caused panic and apprehension among residents of the area as many of them scampered for safety.

The situation was almost hijacked by hoodlums but for the timely intervention of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko who arrived the scene and restored sanity in the area. Some motorists who spoke with Vanguard expressed dissatisfaction at the protest and called on government to prevent further occurrence. In its immediate reaction to the protest, the university authorities in a statement yesterday said: ”In view of the recent developments on our campuses, the senate of the university has directed that all academic activities be suspended forthwith for two weeks.

Accordingly, all students are to vacate the halls of residence latest by 11.am today May 30, 2012. The university security has been mandated to ensure compliance”. No going back—FG Meanwhile, the Federal Government declared, yesterday, that there was no going back on the decision to rename the University of Lagos as Moshood Abiola University as the late acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola deserved the honour.

Addressing State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive council meeting, the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku said President Goodluck Jonathan’s proclamation was only a response to the over a decade clamour by a broad spectrum of Nigerians for Chief Abiola to be immortalized. Maku said government does not see the protest as a mark of disapproval and expressed hope that reasons would prevail at the end of the day. “Yes sometimes government decisions get reactions from the populace, we do not as an administration see this as a disapproval.

We just see it as a normal way in every democracy that when you take major decisions definitely sometimes you have public reaction but we should not allow the protest to overshadow the national significance of what Mr. President has done. I think he has shown that he is a true statesman and he truly appreciates the significance of M.K.O’s contribution in the political development of our country and as people who were adults in 1993.

We think that this decision has been long overdue and that, today, Abiola can turn in his grave and say this nation for whom I made a supreme sacrifice for political development has recognized my contributions. “It is our hope that reason will prevail and that the decision to honor one of our nations’s icons and heroes will be appreciated by all Nigerians including our youths and students who are the future leaders of this country.”

According to the minister, “ if there is any figure that symbolizes sacrifice of self for this nation, that figure is Chief M.K.O Abiola who clearly won the June12, 1993 Presidential election and died in that captivity because he stood for principle, he stood to defend the principle of democracy, and for anyone that is familiar with the development of our politics in the last two decades, there is no event in the political history of our country that touches the hearts of quite a significant number of citizens like the June 12 Presidential election.

“In the last two decades, there has been widespread outcry that this democracy has not given Chief M.K.O Abiola and other heroes who passed on in controversial circumstances their due honour as a result of what they did to stand for the democratic development of this country. These outcries have continued to come from citizens spread across the nation. What Mr. President did was to listen to the outpouring of appeals of persuasions by Nigerians across this country that MKO deserved to be immortalised.

What he therefore did in his capacity as a visitor to the University of Lagos was to name the University after Moshood Abiola of blessed memory. He did so in the best interest of the country, he did so because any nation that does not honour those who clearly stand out and make a sacrifice as role models for others to follow cannot appeal to the best in its own traditions for citizens to follow.

The decision has been made in very good faith by Mr. President and we have seen the reactions by a section of the students of University of Lagos; we have also seen the outpouring of encomiums by patriots and statesmen who really understand the reasons why the President honoured Abiola.” The information minister said the decision by the Federal government to rename the University of Lagos should “unify Nigeria, those who believe in one country, those who believe in one democracy, those who believe in the reward for sacrifice for the nation and I think that is exactly what the President did.

“I remember that around 1987-88 when one of Nigeria’s foremost nationalists and leaders Chief Obafemi Awolowo passed on, the Federal Government renamed the University of Ife as Obafemi Awolowo University. In addition to that also in the course of our history we have had several national institutions named after our past heroes and even living heroes” he said.

Abramovich set to keep Di Matteo

Di Matteo, 41, replaced Andre Villas-Boas in March and led the Blues to triumphs in the FA Cup and European Cup as interim boss. Despite that success, Chelsea owner Abramovich has been unsure of whether to offer the Italian a permanent deal as he was thought to favour a move for departing Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

However, the Russian billionaire is now set to make a U-turn and offer Di Matteo the position as he is not confident of landing Guardiola and is unconvinced by the alternatives. "I think Di Matteo will stay for one year," an ESPN source said. "It might not be ideal, but I am sure he would take it. "I am sure he wants the job and will go for it, believing he can prove he is worth keeping.

There is sure to be a decision sooner rather than later." Meanwhile, Chelsea legend Ron Harris believes Di Matteo "transformed a very, very ordinary" side into European champions and would be a worthy long-term manager at Stamford Bridge. "The body language of the players told you that they were not happy under the previous manager, Andre Villas-Boas had clearly upset to many of them," Harris said.

"A blind man could tell that the players didn't seem happy. "Roberto Di Matteo changed all that. Once he took over certain players found themselves again, they performed under him whereas they were not performing before, so that cannot be a coincidence.

Why Women Cheat: How Women's Infidelities Can Save Marriages

If only all extra-marital affairs had such happy endings as those I've recently read about -- case in point, the young couple in Elizabeth Bernstein's "Back to Happily Ever After" in the Wall Street Journal on May 1st. But the truth is, there are varied ways in which these trysts play out and affect a marriage and there are plenty of unfaithful husbands and wives floating around. According to my research, wives are as engaged in these extra marital affairs as are husbands -- even if in our society, we like to think otherwise.

Female infidelity is a topic that I have been researching since the early nineties. In my ongoing study, I've found that more affairs are happening later in a woman's marriage and a woman's reasons for having an affair both concur with and are distinct from a man's reasons. According to my research:

*Wives say their s*x lives have dwindled

*Women are out in the workplace and have the opportunity to meet other men

*Wives feel neglected by their husbands and their lovers makes them feel special

*Women have access to men through the Internet (old boyfriends as well as new acquaintances)

*Women unexpectedly fall in love with someone else

Of the wives with whom I've spoken, close to half believe that the 'other man' can actually help them to stay in an unhappy or suboptimal marriage because they find their happiness with the lover. This group of wives who remain with their husbands feels more in touch with their desires in this extra curricular relationship than in their marriages and they no longer feel that life is passing them by.

There are wives who tell me that the affair is the one part of their lives that they can control and in this way they are empowered. And then there are wives who report that they feel more balanced in their marriage because of the affair. This faction of women, approximately a third of my interviewee pool, describe themselves as a good wife, a good mother, a successful career woman and a good lover. These relationships with the 'other man' satisfy some wives for years and become a way of life.

More than half the wives I've interviewed describe the lover as a vehicle through which to understand what is missing in the marriage -- and wives in this situation may give up the affair with a renewed commitment to the marriage. Others use the lover as a bridge to leave the marriage, although not necessarily for this person.

My study indicates that:

*70 percent of wives say the 'other man' is the opposite of their husbands
*40 percent view the lover as an escape
*Over 60 percent of women will engage in an extra marital affair (including an affair of the mind and a cyberspace affair) at some point in their marriage
*65 percent of interviewees report that s*x is better with the lover
*90 percent of wives say they never imagined that they would have an affair

What remains so striking to me about women who choose to engage in affairs is how they use the affair to better understand themselves and their marriages. These women may be convention-bound, dedicated wives and mothers, but they seek the affair nonetheless. In this way, the affair represents a form of exploration, and the consequences seem of less concern than the chance to have the experience.

Wedding Crashers: 5 Celebrities Who Crashed Regular People's Weddings

Crazed fans and paparazzi will often try to sneak into star-studded events or parties, but how often do celebs show up unexpectedly at average folks' gatherings? While it may be rare, these encounters do happen. And even though a "regular" person's wedding might seem like the last place a famous face would drop by, A-listers -- and even royals -- have proved us wrong by dropping in on strangers' nuptials.

 Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez
Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez were strolling on the beach in Malibu, Calif. in July 2011 when they heard Bieber's hit song "One Less Lonely Girl" playing at a local wedding reception.

According to TMZ, the famous pair snuck up on some guests and then got on the mic to give the newlyweds a toast. "We just crashed it. We heard a party so we decided to just come. So let's party," Bieber said in an exclusive video.

 Meryl Streep
When Freya and Graham McAnally got married at the Manchester Town Hall in England in December 2011, they knew that cameras were nearby filming "The Iron Lady" starring Meryl Streep.

But what they didn't know is that Streep would show up at their wedding. According to The Daily Mail, the Oscar-winning actress made an appearance at the couple's nuptials, then sent them autographed photos of herself bearing messages of congratulations. "I thought it was amazing, the last thing you expect is an A-List celebrity at your wedding," the bride said.

 Queen Elizabeth
Believe it or not, royals crash weddings sometimes too. In March 2012, Queen Elizabeth showed up at John and Frances Canning's Manchester, England wedding and completely shocked the couple, who had invited her but never really expected her to actually attend. "Basically it was a wedding gift for us," the bride told CNN affiliate ITN.

 Adrien Grenier
In September 2008, "Entourage" actor Adrian Grenier accidentally walked into a wedding while leaving the Ritz-Carlton's spa in Marina del Rey, Calif.

But according to the New York Daily News, no one really seemed to mind. In fact, some guests were all too eager to take some snapshots with the actor.

 John Travolta and Robin Williams
John Travolta and Robin Williams once crashed a wedding together, but it was long before the two were big in Hollywood. According to USA Today, the friends had stopped to get a drink near Travolta's Santa Barbara home back in 1977. After a few drinks, "We were having fun, starting to relax, when we saw there was a wedding next door," Travolta told USA Today in 2009. "We figured we'd crash it."
