Late Port Harcourt Doctor Knew Diplomat Had Ebola Virus – Rivers State Govt Says

Leave a Comment

 At a press conference on Friday, August 29th, Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samson Parker, said that late Dr. Iyke Enemou, who treated ECOWAS diplomat Olu Koye (pictured above), was aware that Mr Koye had the Ebola Virus Disease.

"He had received the late Dr. Patrick Sawyer in Lagos. Upon developing the symptom, confided in a female colleague, called Lilian, who contacted the late Enemuo. It was after contact was established with Dr. Enemuo that Olu Koye flew to Port Harcourt to see him. To conceal his movement, Koye, who had been quarantined among other people for having primary contact with the late Dr. Sawyer, the Liberian-American who transmuted the Ebola virus into Nigeria, sneaked out of the isolation unit where he was being observed and took a flight to Port Harcourt and switched off his phone so that he could not be reached or traced should he answer a call.”

When he got to Port Harcourt, he checked into Mandate Gardens Hotel in the Rumunokoro area in Obio/Akpor LGA which is close to Sam Steel Clinic where Dr. Enemuo worked.

"From what we have gathered so far, Dr. Enemuo, knowing that Koye was positive of the Ebola virus took some measures of precaution to protect himself while treating Koye.
“Knowing the enormity of what he was doing, Enemuo upon Koye’s departure for Lagos, poured bleach all over the room that Koye slept in order to sanitise the place.”
The commissioner revealed that Dr Enemuo, after falling ill, asked another doctor at Good Heart Hospital along Evo Road in G.R.A. to treat him, but at no point did Dr Enemuo tell his colleague that he may have contracted the Ebola virus, instead he lied that he had fever.

"He lied. He did not tell the doctor that was treating him his full story. But the doctor, a nice and conscientious professional, suspected that Enemuo was either hiding something or was suffering from a strange ailment because he proved negative to malaria, fever and typhoid fever.

“To be sure of what he was doing, he spoke to other very experienced doctors about the strange case he was handling in his hospital.”
The commissioner said the doctor treating Enemuo even invited some other doctors to come over to his hospital to see if they could understand Enemuo’s strange illness but no doctor came.

Dr. Enemuo's health deteriorated until he died on August 22nd after which his body was taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

Powerful Nigerians Don’t Want Chibok Girls Rescued - Negotiator Reveals

Leave a Comment

 Some powerful Nigerians are sabotaging the efforts of the Federal Government and other concerned citizens to ensure that the over 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram are released.

 This was disclosed by the President, Civil Rights Congress, Mr. Shehu Sani, in a recent exclusive interview with SUNDAY PUNCH. Sani, who has been involved in efforts to get government and Boko Haram to discuss the fate of the girls in the past, said some powerful individuals, whom he refused to name, ensured that the talks derailed. But that government has begun fresh talks with the group to secure the release of the girls.
“What I want to tell you is that something is being done about it but I’m not disposed to making it public. Most times, publicising these issues always lead to sabotage by those who do not want the girls freed. I will not mention the names of these Nigerians. However, I can tell you that real and genuine moves are going on, which I am a part of.

The claim that the girls have been abandoned is not true. There are genuine efforts by government and some individuals, who are discreetly making efforts toward getting their (pupils’) safe return home.”

Reports have claimed that the girls who were kidnapped from the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, have been sighted in camps inside Sambisa Forest, in some border towns near Cameroon and in the Central African Republic. The human rights activist noted that the girls could only be freed either forcefully or through dialogue and negotiation.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo; Sani; and a United Arab Emirates-based Nigerian freelance journalist, Ahmad Salkida, who had communication channels with Boko Haram, had offered to mediate between the government and the sect. But none of these efforts have yielded fruits.
He added that the foreign intervention sought by some Nigerians had not produced results.

The United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Israel had offered to assist Nigeria in rescuing the school girls. Both the US and the UK had sent security experts and technology to locate the abductees and secure their release. While the US claimed to have located the girls, France had specifically opposed negotiations with the sect. Speaking on efforts made by these countries so far, Sani said:
“I am not aware of any serious efforts made by any foreign country. I am not aware of what is happening on the side of the US forces. From the side of dialogue or negotiation, I have not seen any serious intervention or involvement of these countries.” Source

Ebola : Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo Share His Thoughts On Late Patrick Sawyer

Leave a Comment

 Former president, Lusegun Obasanjo has expressed his thoughts on Sawyer, his act and those who made it possible for him to enter Nigeria with the disease and spread it.

Speaking at an event held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun state today, Obasanjo said;
"It is devilish enough Patrick Sawyer had to spread this and indeed spread it to Nigeria in connivance with some Liberian authorities from his country, because they knew he had it before he came to Nigeria. The EVD has started to take its toll on the country and the West African sub region. The toll is not only on the number of those who are ill or dead but on the communities, countries, regions and sub-region"

'How I Survived Ebola' – Late Nurse' Fiance, Dennis Akagha Speaks Out

Leave a Comment

 Dennis Akagha, fiance to late Justina Ejelonu, the First Consultant Hospital nurse who died after being infected with the deadly Ebola virus by Liberian Patrick Sawyer, in this exclusive interview with Vanguard spoke about how his late fiancee contracted the deadly disease, how she lost their unborn child while battling with Ebola, and also revealed that Justina had just landed the job at the hospital and met Sawyer on her first day there. He also spoke on how he got infected with the virus and how he finally got discharged. Fimd the in-depth interview below...

On his relationship with the late Justina, Dennis said;
"The  truth is that Justina and I were not legally married, we were planning for our traditional marriage in October and she just got this job. She was a qualified graduate nurse and got the job at the First Consultant Hospital in Lagos. She resumed duty at the hospital on the 21st of July, while Patrick Sawyer was admitted at the hospital on the 20th. He was her first patient. She was one of the nurses that nursed him. She was pregnant and so her immune system was weak, which made it easy for her to contract the disease. On that first day which was a Monday, she was having some pregnancy symptoms, but I just encouraged her to go because it was her first day at work. Sawyer was her first patient. The next day, Tuesday, she didn’t work on Sawyer. Wednesday and Thursday, she was off. Then on Friday, Patrick Sawyer died. They didn’t know he had Ebola, it was three days later that they realized it was Ebola" he said

On how he found out she had contracted the deadly virus, he said
"It was after Sawyer died that she told me she nursed him but that she was on gloves. She even thanked God that she didn’t have direct contact with him. The fever continued and we thought it was just pregnancy symptoms and even when she went to her hospital, they confirmed the same thing. She took drugs and ran tests, yet it persisted. At night, she was usually cold and feverish and her body temperature was usually very high. At a point, I began to suspect that she had contacted the virus. I did some research on the disease and realised that she was having similar symptoms. On the 14th of August, it became serious, she started stooling and vomiting. I had to clean up everything. All of a sudden, she started bleeding and she started crying that she had lost the pregnancy. I had to call her relatives and other people. The bleeding persisted and I had to clean up everything. Initially I was not wearing gloves because I felt I had already been exposed to the virus. But later I cautioned myself and started wearing nylon on my hands. But I couldn’t stay away from her. I kept consoling her. Even when I took her to the hospital, she wanted to hold me and I told her to also consider my safety. She managed to hold herself and was able to find her way out in a pool of her blood. We chartered a taxi to the hospital, but first, I took her to First Consultant Hospital because I felt they should know more. When we got there, I was directed to IGH, Yaba. I told the taxi driver to take us there. The driver wasn’t even aware of what was going on as he took us to Yaba.  Justina was on the floor for 30 minutes before she was attended to. She was screaming that she was going to die. She was seriously bleeding, she had to come out of the taxi and lay on the floor. I ran around, trying to get doctors to attend to her. After everything, they took her in, took her blood samples and the following day, the result came out that it was Ebola. They washed the taxi with chlorine and also bathed the taxi driver and I with chlorine spray. At that point, the taxi driver knew what was going on, he couldn’t even take me home because he was so scared. I had to look for somewhere to pass the night in the hospital. Early the next morning, I left the Hospital. The taxi driver is alive today, nothing happened to him. We have been checking on him and the last time we spoke he told me, he was fine" he said.

On what happened after he was exposed to the virus, Dennis said;
"14 days after I was exposed to Ebola, my temperature rose from the usual 35.2 degrees centigrade to 37.2. The Lagos State government gave me a thermometer the day I dropped Justina off at the centre. It took them two straight weeks to visit my home and to disinfect it. Before they came, I had already done the much I could do. I used bleach and detergent to clean the whole house, furniture and clothes inclusive. We should be reminded and educated that a healthy person with Ebola virus cannot get anybody infected, except if the person is sick and totally down with the virus like what happened to Sawyer and to my late wife-to-be, Justina. I contacted the virus because Justina was very sick and I was taking care of her without any appropriate protection. When we knew what we were dealing with it was almost too late for me as I had already contacted the virus" he said.
On what was done for him after his visit to the Isolation centre, Dennis said
"The Lagos State government sent health professionals to check on me regularly to know how l was doing or if l had the signs of the virus manifesting. So they used to come around to check on me. At some point they created scenes with their visits. I was embarrassed and I was stigmatized. I complained severely to them that I didn’t like what they were doing. Then, one Saturday they visited again, I complained about the pains I was beginning to experience; excruciating pains around my waist. I started praying and asking people to pray for me. Before this time, I believed in the Holy Communion, so I usually take it daily and do feet washing. I was going to the hospital daily to see late Justina. Initially, I was seeing her through the window and she would say I should take her out of the hospital. She complained of lack of care. Perhaps, Justina would have survived the virus, if not for the state she was in. Her immune system was down because she was pregnant. Along the line, she had a miscarriage and lost the baby due to the Ebola virus disease. The doctors, who were supposed to do an evacuation on her couldn’t do it because they claimed that an evacuation was too risky as she was heavily infected and may pass on the virus to another person. Since nothing was done even after the bleeding had stopped, it led to more complications for her because the already dead foetus somehow got rotten in the womb and started a damaging process which led to further complication. Meanwhile, she was still stooling and vomiting and since nobody could dare to touch her, she was left on top of her excretions even when she couldn’t do much for herself due to her weak state. She was given her incisions and other drugs. I believe if some people survived Justina should have been one of them. At a point, I wished I was a doctor myself; I would have taken the risk of doing the evacuation because it really affected her".

On the last day he say his late fiancee, Dennis said
"The last day I saw her, I had to go inside the ward because she was so unkempt as nobody attended to her. At that time, the quarantined patients were in the former facility where there was no water and she had messed up herself again. I had to look for water to clean her up, change her pampers and arrange her bedding. Since I was aware of what I was dealing with, I got myself protected while cleaning up the place. I made sure she looked better than when I saw her. Justina was shivering the last day I saw her, one side of her stomach was already swollen, and her legs were also swollen. I prayed for her.At a point, she needed oxygen and the hospital couldn’t provide it. Her friends had to provide it. That was the last day I saw her. On Sunday Morning, I called her line like I usually did before visiting her, but she didn’t pick her calls. When I got to the hospital, I was told that she was dead".
Asked if late Justina was taking his calls while she was at the Isolation center, Dennis said;
"Yes, in fact she called me that last day and I knew she was going to give up, because she was saying some funny things. She said I should tell my people to go and meet her father so as to finalize our marriage plans, that she’s leaving that place.
Asked if he was not scared that he would die form the illness seeing that his Fiancees health was deteriorating, Dennis said;
"I personally don’t believe in taking medications. I had the mentality that I wasn’t sick. I told the government what I was experiencing. On the day they came to pick me up for treatment, all of a sudden, my temperature went back to normal. The shivering and pains were all gone. So they decided that they would be checking on me. But it got to a point people stopped selling things to me. It was as if the government got a report that I shouldn’t be around. So, they came and said I should go with them that they wanted to take my blood sample. I went with them and they took my blood sample, I was kept in a ward known as the ‘suspected ward. The result came out and it was positive. I was then taken to a confined ward. One of the doctors from UNICEF, a white lady told me that they were having issues with the results and that they would have to re-run the tests. They did the tests again and it was still positive. I told them that it wasn’t my result and that I was healthy. I was even doing my usual exercises (press-ups) every morning. I kept telling them that I wasn’t sick. They took my blood sample the third time. That night, they told me that I tested negative in the last result and that I don’t have any reason to remain there. That was how I was discharged" he said

Speaking on what was hapening to his job as he was under isolation, Dennis said;
"I was a marketer in an oil and gas company. I worked on commission basis, but at a point, I realized that people were not calling me and when I called they won’t pick my calls. Even the person that I report directly refused to pick my calls and also refused to associate with me. Justina and I just got our jobs, she got hers at First Consultant Hospital and I got mine as a marketer with the oil and gas company.
On whether the government or First Consultant Hospital owes late Justina's family  some form of compensations, Dennis said;
"Although, no amount of money they give to the family will bring her back I think the government owes Justina’s family a lot because she died trying to save a situation. Justina died in active service as her death wasn’t natural".

On how his status changed from postive to negative, Dennis said
"I was reading a book on healing and taking of the Holy Communion. So I learnt to take Holy Communion morning, afternoon and night. I also engaged myself in feet-washing every day before going to bed. The Almighty God saved me; the Holy Spirit healed me. It wasn’t as though l didn’t fall sick as l had direct contact with Justina but the Almighty God healed me. When I was discharged, I got to my house on Saturday evening and spent two hours the next day, Sunday, thanking God on my own. I didn’t go to church or anywhere because of the already established stigma but today I can confidently attend church activities because I guess they all know I’m free now. I know my faith and belief healed me. God also worked for me apart from the fact that my immune system is also working. I believe I got healed also because friends prayed for me" he said. Source

Foreign Negotiator Names Alimodu Sheriff And Former Chief Of Army Staff As Boko Haram's Sponsors

Leave a Comment

 In a recent interview with Arise News TV, Australian hostage negotiator, Stephen Davis, who was hired by the Nigerian government months ago to help negotiate with Boko Haram members to facilitate the release of abducted Chibok girls, mentioned the name of former Borno state Governor, Alimodu Sheriff as a sponsor of the terrorist group, Boko Haram. He also said that an unnamed past Chief of Army Staff who was sacked by Pres. Jonathan was also a sponsor of the group.

In the video released yesterday, Davis was very quick to mention the names of the alleged sponsors.
"The first thing to do.. go and arrest former Governor, Sheriff. Former Borno Governor Sheriff who has been funding this for years. He hooks these guys up. He is so frightened that he has switched party to the ruling PDP in the hope that this would give him protection. That guy has really got to go and you know he is enormously corrupt." Continue...
"Why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has not yet picked him up is anybody's guess. There is a...the former Chief of Army Staff retired in January but was actually sacked by the President is another sponsor. I would give you the names if you like, I have no fear of this. We are very confident and in fact Boko Haram senior commanders who have been naming them in the interactions I have had with them over many months, confirming what we knew sometime before from other commanders" he said.
After the interview was released, former FCT Minister, Mallam Nasir El Rufai  took to his facebook page to say that the unnamed former army Chief is Lt. Gen Ihejirika rtd, the immediate past Chief of Army staff. Below is what El-Rufai posted on his facebook page

"Australian hostage negotiator Stephen Davis has just named Former Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff and immediate chief of army staff Lt-Gen Ihejirika (removed in January 2014) as the Boko Haram brains on ARISE NEWS.  Davis said Boko Haram commanders that he has been negotiating with as the source of this information. The kingpins not only finance BH operations but select targets for assassination and execution. Finally, the truth about BH is coming out. Hopefully, the murderers of General Muhammadu Shuwa, the abductors of the Chibok girls, those truly responsible for the Nyanya bombings, and attempted assassination of General Buhari and Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi will be known. We hope the authorities will take the steps necessary to act on this revelation, and thereby discharge their duty to protect us, the citizens of Nigeria. That is just what it is, a hope!".

Reacting to the claims against him made by El Rufai, Lt Gen Ihejirika who spoke with Vanguard said he isn't surprised that the allegation is coming from the former minister who he said is the real sponsor of Boko.
"The Commanders including El-Rufai know where the problem is. He should stop deceiving Nigerians by trying to divert attention. When the Boko Haram operation started, supporters of the sect like El Rufai said that there was nothing like Boko Haram and that the Army was just killing innocent youths. If you also remember, not too long ago, some of their supporters including El-Rufai said that I was re-inventing the killing of the Ibos during the Biafra war following government's determination to rid the country of terrorism. The likes of El Rufai started the campaign of human rights abuses in order to divert international attention from the heinous crime being committed by the Boko Haram terrorist. The likes of El Rufai have been supporting Boko Haram. Infact, El Rufai and his likes are the same group of people that ensured the army did not get the requested equipment to deal with the menace once and for all as they used their cohorts to tell the government that procuring modern equipment was unnecessary. At the onset of this crisis, I was the first person to declare that the country was at war but a group of sponsors led by El Rufai disagreed, saying that it was not true. It is the same group of El-Rufai that started the human rights abuses campaign. It was done in order to block any international assistance after the state of emergency was declared and the sect was initially tamed. That gave Boko Haram time and respite to build up again" he said. Source

 The residents of Ajiyo Olokun Olunde area, Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State, on Wednesday, woke up to the wailings of a middle-aged woman, who was strangulated by her own husband, Saidina Yusuf.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the neighbours were alerted by the shout of people living with the victim’s family, while Yusuf carried out the dastardly act. One of the landlords in the area, Mr Yusuf Rasaq, who spoke with newsmen, said he was coming from the mosque around 6.30 a.m when he was alerted by neighbours. He added that immediately, he went to their apartment to confront the man.

Rasaq said the deceased’s husband informed that he was standing right behind his wife in the walkway, looking at her from behind and just slided and strangulated her. He, however, informed the Nigerian Tribune that the man was suffering from mental disorder for sometime, but hinted that he had since being treated before he returned to the neighbourhood last week. How I Got Pregnant For My Husband's Son - Woman Shares Touching Story

Leave a Comment

  A women in dire need of advice shares are story, asking for help. Read below..

  I'm 35 years old and I've been married for the past 17 years.
For 17 years I've been praying for the fruit of the womb. My husband and I had been to different hospitals for medical check to no avail. The doctors kept saying we are both fertile (meaning we can both make babies). I married my husband while i was 18 years old and still a virgin. My husband has always been there for me in everything; understanding and supportive during our trying times.

About 2 years ago, my childhood friend advised me on what to do... Following her advice, I remembered 'Bayo;' my 22-year-old house help. Bayo has been with us since he was 8 years old and we treated him as if he was ours. I started talking to him about his personal life. Few months later, my husband traveled to his home town to see his people, so I utilized the opportunity!
I locked Bayo in my room and begged him to have sex with me. He refused at first, then I threatened him that I would send him back to d village. He later agreed, so we had sex 5 times before the break of dawn. The next day, my husband returned home.

Thirteen days later, I became pregnant. Bayo was not aware that I was pregnant and I gave him N1million and told him to take the money and go back to the village. The little chap was grateful and happy about the money.

I eventually told my husband that I was pregnant and he instantly became the happiest person in the world. He called his mother, updated them about the news and they started buying kid clothing and toys.

Few months later, we did a scan and the doctors told us that I was going to have twins.
Glory be to God, I gave birth to Taiwo (female) and Kehinde (male). Two days ago, my husband woke me up in the middle of the night, held me in his arms, looked into my eyes, and asked me: "Jumoke, who is the father of our kids?"
I was shocked and scared at how he could have known. I just knew he had stumbled on the truth because of the way he asked me. I didn't know what to say. I was so shy because I knew I had betrayed his trust. I looked into his eyes and I burst into tears.
He then said to me:
"Jumoke, before you start talking, I have a confession to make."
I cleaned my face and sat upright. He went ahead and told me how he had unprotected sex with a girl in his village and contacted STD before he got married and how he didn't treat it for a very long time. He told me that when he eventually went to the hospital, the doctors told him that the STD he didn't treat early had made him sterile (was incapable of making a woman pregnant). He said he treated the STD before he got married to me and the he has always known that he was sterile.

He explained that all those test we've been doing had been paid for and that he had always told the doctors  to give me a wrong result. He also added that the woman he had sex with back then got pregnant and that the child was BAYO; our house-help. He also went ahead by saying that he had always wanted to tell me to look for someone to impregnate me but that he just didn't have the balls to do so. But now that I had done it, he would like to know who the father is.
"I fainted..."
I need matured advice please help.

 A 33-year-old applicant, Chineye Chinwuba, has alleged that her attempt to terminate the love affair she had with the Chief Executive Officer of Chisco Transport Limited, Chidi Anyaegbu, was what led to her being charged before an Igbosere magistrate’s court for threatening the transporter’s life.

Vanguard reports that the defendant, who is facing a one-count charge preferred against her by the police, was docked before Magistrate Nike Olagbende. The prosecutor, Superintendent of Police Agustine Onwuemene, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between November 2013 and August 20, 2014, at about 4pm, at 15 Ruxton road at Ikoyi area of Lagos.

He said that she sent a threat text message to one Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, Chief Executive Officer of Chisco Transport Limited, that she was going to eliminate him and his family and that they will go to hell fire for eternity. According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Section 230 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

Earlier, the defendant had pleaded not guilty to the one count charge against her.

Her counsel, Amaka Nwafor, urged the court to grant the defendant bail in the most liberal term, adding that the matter is just an allegation until the suspect is proven guilty. The prosecutor said he was not going to oppose the bail application, adding that he has two witnesses in court, saying although the complainant was not in court, there was a representative from his company.

Nwafor, however, told the magistrate that the matter could not be conducted in proxy, that the complaint has to be in court too.

The defendant also told the open court that it was Anyaegbu who brought her to Lagos from Onitsha in Anambra State on August 5, 2012. She said Anyaegbu was her lover and that they started dating immediately she got to Lagos, adding that their initial agreement was for him to help her get a job which he promised but failed to do.

According to her, the two started having an affair in 2012, which made the Chisco boss to give her a two-room apartment in one of his houses in Lekki.
She said:
“I told him I was quitting the relationship and ever since then, he has been harassing me. Last December, he took me to Tinubu magistrate’s court, alleging that I stole his N1.5 million. He told me that the only way he could forget about the matter was for me to continue with the relationship. I only sent him an insulting text message, I never sent him a death threat.
On March 15, he sent at least eight thugs to my house and they threw my things and my little boy out. The people in the compound were aware of the incident. He then said he had rented another apartment for me at Ikoyi, which is where I am currently living but I insisted the relationship could not continue.

Last Sunday, while I was at home, a Police Inspector came in to my apartment and told me that I was under arrest. The case at the Tinubu court is still ongoing.’’

Magistrate Olagbende granted the defendant bail in the sum of N25,000 and one responsible surety in like sum.

President Goodluck Jonathan Condemns Stigmatization Of Nigerians Over Ebola

Leave a Comment

 President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Wednesday in Abuja condemned the stigmatization of Nigerians by some countries over recent cases of the Ebola Virus Disease in the country.

Speaking at a meeting with Mr. David Navarro, a Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, President Jonathan particularly denounced discriminatory actions such as that which forced Nigeria’s team to the Youth Olympics in China to abandon its participation.

Noting that there was no justification for such stigmatization of Nigerians since the Ebola Virus Disease had been effectively  contained in the country and never attained epidemic levels, the President called for the cessation of discriminatory actions against Nigerians over the virus and urged the UN Secretary General, Mr.  Ban Ki Moon  to support the call.

Responding to the Secretary General’s commendation of Nigeria’s management of the threat of Ebola, President Jonathan praised the Federal Ministry of Health, the Lagos State Government and all Nigerians for the success achieved so far in containing the virus and avoiding a national epidemic.

“All hands have been on deck to contain the virus here. I commend my team and the Lagos State Government. We have been able to set politics aside and work in unison to deal with a national threat.

“All other Nigerians have played a part too by complying with the directives and advice we have issued to stop the virus from spreading any further. The success we have had is a testimony to what we can achieve as people if we set aside our differences and work together,” he told Mr. Navarro.

The President assured the Special Envoy that in spite of the seeming  success of  its containment measures, the Federal Government and its agencies will remain vigilant to guard against further cases of Ebola in the country.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and we will also support other affected African countries as much as we can because we cannot be completely safe from the virus as long as it continues to ravage some countries in our sub-region and continent. We will continue to work with the international community to curb the outbreak in other countries,” President Jonathan pledged.

Mr. Navarro who  had visited Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, the countries worst hit by Ebola before coming to Nigeria, told the President that he had come, on the instruction of the UN Secretary-General, to applaud Nigeria’s successful containment of the virus.

“The Secretary-General asked me to come here too, not because you have an Ebola problem, but because you have tackled it in an exemplary fashion.

“Your personal leadership on the matter has been key. There may still be some work to be done before the virus is completely cleared out from here, but other countries can learn from your fine example,” Mr. Navarro told the President.

British Ebola Patient Receives ZMapp Drug

Leave a Comment

 The first British citizen to contract the deadly Ebola virus, a 29-year-old British nurse, William Pooley, has been given the experimental drug ZMapp in London. Two US patients had recovered after taking the drug, though an infected Liberian doctor died.

Dr Michael Jacobs, clinical leader in infectious diseases at Royal Free Hospital, told Sky News:
We have had the opportunity to give him the ZMapp treatment that I am sure you are aware of. It is an experimental medicine and we made that absolutely clear in our discussions with him. After careful consideration William decided that he would like to take the experimental drug ZMapp and he took the first dose of the drug on Monday. What has become apparent to us is that he is clearly a rather resilient and remarkable young man."

Pooley was diagnosed with the hemorrhagic disease while working in Sierra Leone. He was flown back to the United Kingdom on Sunday in a specially adapted Royal Air Force cargo plane.

The success rate of the Ebola drug, ZMapp, which is grown in tobacco leaves, remains uncertain. US Ebola-infected missionaries, Dr Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol were both successfully treated with the serum in Atlanta and left hospital last week. However, Liberian doctor, Abraham Borbor died on Sunday despite receiving the ZMapp drug.

 "The next few days will be crucial. The disease has a variable course and we will know much more in a week's time," said Mike Jacobs, infectious diseases consultant at the London hospital.

Nigerian Military Denies Reports Of soldiers Fleeing To Cameroon After Heated Battle With Boko Haram

Leave a Comment

 The Nigerian Defense HQ has denied reports that 480 Nigerian soldiers fled to Cameroon after a sustained battle with Boko Haram yesterday at Gamboru-Ngala in Borno state. Read statement below...

The Nigerian troops that were found in Cameroon was as a result of a sustained battle between the troops and the terrorists around the borders with Cameroun which saw the Nigerian troops charging through the borders in a tactical maneuver.  Eventually they found themselves on Camerounian soil.  Being allies the normal protocol of managing such incident demanded that the troops submit their weapons in order to assure the friendly country that they were not on a hostile mission.
Following necessary discussions between Nigerian and Camerounian military authorities, the issues have been sorted out.  Subsequently, the troops are on their way back to join their unit in Nigeria.
The reference to the incidence as a defection is therefore not appropriate considering the discussion between the two countries’ military leadership and the series of contacts with the soldiers who have confirmed that they are safe.
Meanwhile, troops are repelling a group of terrorists who are trying to enter the country through Gamborou Ngala. A group of them who fizzled into the town are being pursued.

Boko Haram Declares Gwoza An 'Islamic Caliphate' - Report

Leave a Comment

 In a video made available to AFP, the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, declared the creation of an Islamic caliphate in Gwoza town in Borno state seized by the sect early this month.

 According to AFP, Shekau declared that Gwoza now has 'nothing to do with Nigeria'.
"Thanks be to Allah who gave victory to our brethren in (the town of) Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate.

 By the grace of Allah we will not leave the town. We have come to stay,” said Shekau

Find the excerpts of the transcribed speech by Shekau after the cut. Meanwhile the Nigerian Military has reacted to Shekau's claims, saying the claim is empty. The military says appropriate military operations to secure Gwoza from activities of the bandits is still ongoing.

 Read excerpts of the transcribed speech by sect leader Mr. Shekau below...
 "I chose to deliver this message in order to refute the lies being spread by the government, about the operations we had in recent times.
"We warn the vigilantes called civilian JTF to back off; if not, there will be no place for them to hide. We have evidence of how you killed some of our brethren whom you would ask if they were Boko Haram members before you killed them. We know how you humiliated them by asking them if they had ever carried guns or killed someone…We know everything about the evil you committed against our brethren.

"We still have the magnanimity of asking you to repent because you will never succeed in this way by the grace of Allah. And I swear by Allah that we will never stop killing you, because Allah commanded us to kill people like you. If we pity you and spare you, one day you will become infidels. So, to us, having pity on you is an act of disbelief. You can continue to run or hide your identities in women’s attire, but we will get to you and remove the women’s clothing off of you. Then, while you are shouting for mercy, we will strike, smash your heads and kill you all. Even if you don't do anything to us we will kill you...We would do it even to avenge our brethren. You killed our brethren in large numbers.

"We don't joke with religion (quoting from the Koran). There is no hypocrisy in this religion. It is only the truth.
"We are not proud of our strength, nor with our weapons nor with anything we have but we are only proud of victory from Allah the exalted. Victory is only from God. Who is America in the sight of Allah? Who is America in the sight of Allah? Who is Israel in the sight of Allah? Who is France in the sight of Allah?”
